Attractions
Winchester Mystery House - Beautiful, yet bizarre,
the Winchester Mystery House is an amazing tour for both adults
and children. Sarah L. Winchester, heiress to the Winchester
rifle fortune, lived in this unfinished house during its perpetual
construction. Built in 1884, it occupied the lives of carpenters
and craftsmen until her death 38 years later. An architectural
marvel, the Victorian mansion is filled with many unexplained
oddities, such as the staircase to the ceiling and a door
that opens onto a wall. Unlike most homes of its era, this
160-room Victorian mansion had modern heating and sewer systems,
gas lights that operated by pressing a button, three working
elevators, and 47 fireplaces. From rambling roofs and exquisite
hand inlaid parquet floors to the gold and silver chandeliers
and Tiffany art glass windows, you will be impressed by the
staggering amount of creativity, energy, and expense poured
into every detail. For additional information, visit their
website at www.winchestermysteryhouse.com.
San Jose Arena - In addition to the 41 San Jose Sharks
regular season home games, the HP Pavilion at San Jose - the
San Jose Arena - hosts 120 to 180 events every year, including
Olympic athletes, Grammy award-winning musicians, first-rate
shows, exhibitions and competitions, and a variety of family
and children's favorites. Located in the heart of world-renowned
Silicon Valley, San Jose Arena occupies 17 acres in downtown
San Jose, California.

abstract tile mural, the San Jose McEnery Convention Center
encompasses over 425,000 square feet of function space. Designed
for convenience and versatility, it offers 143,000 square
feet of column-free prime exhibit space divisible by three,

capable of seating up to 2,400 theater-style, and can accommodate
banquets to 5,000. The San Jose Convention Center has 30-foot-high
finished ceilings, 12 loading bays with drive-on access to
the exhibit hall floors, complete audio-visual, sound and
lighting services, cellular, standard and ISDN telephony services,
and fiber optic and copper cabling throughout the facility
with DS-3 high-speed internet access.

largest outdoor concert venue, featuring top music artists

Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad - Located minutes
from Scotts Valley, you'll find America's last steam-powered
passenger railroad with year-round passenger train service
- the historic Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad.
Discover California's towering redwood forests from two historic
railroads on your next visit to the San Francisco or Monterey
Bay areas. Travel by steam train up a narrow-gauge track through
the Big Trees to Bear Mountain or by beach train down the
scenic San Lorenzo River to the sunny beaches of Santa Cruz. [Top]
San Francisco - You will be captivated by the extraordinary
charm and character of San Francisco and its many communities
- Pacific Heights, Richmond District, South of Market, Nob
Hill, North Beach, The Marina, Mission District, Haight-Ashbury,
the East Bay communities, and many eclectic neighborhoods.
San Francisco offers a diversity of arts, attractions, nightclubs,
museums, art galleries, restaurants, festivals, entertainment
and sightseeing tours. Experience all the highlights including,
Twin Peaks, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, the San Francisco
Zoo, Union Square and the city's cavalier ambiance. The orange
towers of the Golden Gate Bridge are visible from almost every
high point in the city. Old World charm and ethnic neighborhoods
combine with a picturesque ocean setting to make San Francisco
a unique and hip American city.
Golden Gate Bridge - The orange towers of the Golden
Gate Bridge, perhaps the best-loved symbol of San Francisco,
are visible from almost every high point in the city. The
bridge, which spans 4,200 ft, had taken only 52 months to
design and build when it was opened in 1937. Some quarter
of a million people turned up for a sunrise party to celebrate
its fiftieth anniversary in 1987; the winds were strong and
the bridge buckled, but fortunately did not break. Driving
across is a real thrill, racing under the towers, while the
half-hour walk across allows you to take in its enormous size
and absorb the views. It's also a favorite with the suicidal
- in a typical year dozens jump to their deaths. Those jumping
are said to hit the water at a speedy 80mph - few have survived
the leap.
Fisherman's Wharf - Fisherman's Wharf and the nearby
waterfront district is the most-visited tourist attraction
in the country. Waterfront marketplaces include The Anchorage,
The Cannery, Ghirardelli Square and PIER 39. The Wharf's working
hub, "Fish Alley," sells thousands of tons of sole,
shrimp, salmon, sea bass, squid and other deep sea delicacies.
During the crab season (mid-November through June), devotees
line up for the best of the catch. A fleet of historic ships
berths at Hyde Street Pier, a component of the San Francisco
Maritime National Historical Park, which also includes the
Maritime Museum. The USS Pampanito, a WWII fleet submarine,
may be boarded at Pier 45. If you wish to get out on the water,
60-minute bay cruises depart several times a day from piers
39 and 41. Head to the museums of Fort Mason and on to the
expanse of green parkland along the Marina district, which
afford excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Pier 39 - Just 2 blocks from Fisherman's Wharf, Pier
39 has two levels of restaurants and specialty shops in addition
to a 350 berth marina. Pier 39 is a great place to watch the
sail boats, cruise ships and cargo ships pass by on San Francisco
Bay. Pier 39 is also about as close as you can get to Alcatraz
Island without getting on a boat.
Twin Peaks - Twin Peaks provides sweeping views of
the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Angel Island, Yerba Buena
Island, Berkeley, Oakland, Downtown San Francisco and much
of the San Francisco Bay and beyond.
Japantown - The heart of San Jose's Japantown is Japan Center,
a five-acre complex of hotels, shops, theaters, sushi bars
and restaurants at Post and Buchanan Streets. It is crowned
by a five-tiered pagoda, a symbol of eternal peace. More than
12,000 residents of Japanese descent call it home. There is
much to learn from this small slice of Japanese life. Each
April, 'J-Town' celebrates its Cherry Blossom Festival. Taiko
drumming, martial arts, doll-making and calligraphy demonstrations
lead to a colorful parade.
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk - California's oldest
amusement park is about as original and memorable as boardwalks
come. The only major seaside amusement park on the Pacific
Coast, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk blends old-time nostalgia
with modern thrills. You can buy a bag of salt-water taffy,
get your fortune told in the old-style arcade, take a road
rage-releasing ride on the bumper cars, or test your mettle
on the giant wood-framed roller coaster, The Giant Dipper,
whose unforgettable dips rival any extreme adventure in new
theme parks. The Santa Cruz Boardwalk features a carousel
and little cars and airplanes for the kiddies as well. Bring
a swimsuit and a towel, as you'll be steps from the sandy,
swimmable Santa Cruz beach. The Boardwalk is open daily Memorial
Day through Labor Day, weekends Fall through Spring. 400 Beach
St., Santa Cruz, CA 95060; (831) 423-5590. [Top]
Santa Cruz Wharf - Stretching out a half mile into
the waters of Monterey Bay and adjacent to the Santa Cruz
Beach Boardwalk, the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf is lined with
family-owned fish markets, seafood restaurants and gift shops.
You can hop aboard a boat for a sightseeing excursion around
the bay, or stroll to the end of the wharf to watch the comical
sea lions. The wharf plays host to a number of events throughout
the year, including Jazz on the Wharf and Woodies on the Wharf.
Monterey Bay - Offering 29 miles of coastline, Santa
Cruz is a lively homeport for fun and exploration - a playground
for both sea life and land-kind. Adventure into the vibrant
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the world's largest
protected ocean habitat. Dive lush kelp forests and watch
sea otters scoop up lunch. Kayak waterways shared with dolphins
and sea lions. Sail indigo waters and glide with gray whales
migrating through the sanctuary both winter and spring. Touch
a starfish and marvel the greatness of an 87-foot whale skeleton
while exploring underworld mysteries at the Seymour Marine
Discovery Center. As evening nears, watch the last orange
streak of sunset fade into the resting waters.
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary - Spanning
276 miles of shoreline between Marin and Cambria, this 5,322-square-mile
marine sanctuary is one of the world's most diverse ecosystems,
with the heart of it all lying in the Monterey Bay. Numerous
mammals, seabirds, fishes, invertebrates and plants make their
home here. Endless opportunities to take advantage of the
Sanctuary's resources abound in Santa Cruz, including kayaking,
hiking, whale watching, fishing, sailing, surfing, scuba diving
and much more. Main Office: 299 Foam Street, Monterey, CA;
